Murkon's Refuge: Level 3 question (SPOILERS)

Warning: Spoilers ahead!

On Murkon's Refuge, level 3, there is a steep hill that I can't climb. What's up (pun not intended) with this? Am I supposed to climb it before or after I go to level 4?

That's all the help I'm looking for now, I'll write another message if I get totally stuck. Right now my main concern are the hordes of vampire bats on level 3. If there's at least 7 of them they more or less wipe out my entire party. Anything else I can handle but not the bats!
