Having asked Sam about it myself, I can tell you the full story. By the way, if you draw the doors as solid squares, the SS becomes 88, which defeats the purpose anyway.
The SS was intentional, and represents Sam's initials. The "I" could also be interpreted as a 1, which fits in nicely with Sam's classic username, "ss1", from his college days. I believe information about the username can be found somewhere on Rinkworks; if not, I heard about it in an unarchived chat session. In any case, the "1" is not intentional, while the "SS" is.
