SSI (Strategic Simulations, Inc.) did several classic fantasy adventure CRPGs in the late 80's; if the "SSI" is intentional, it's possible that it is a tribute to them.

By the way, I don't see your map at all, but judging from the other responses I seem to be the only one who doesn't. Not that it matters; I have my own mostly-complete map and I moved on to level 2 last night. :-)
