Try "training" the characters in battle by going to the same location and killing the same monsters over and over again. One great place for such "training" is down the south corridor from Perrin, just walk south until you get to the first door to east. Enter and there will always be monsters.

Kill the monsters and return straight to Perrin. Resurrect any dead characters, rest at the inn, and buy new weapons and armour with the gold you have gained. Once your characters are of level 2 or 3 you can progress beyond this "safe" place and go fight other monsters.

You should always have at least one Knight, at least one Wizard and at least one Rogue in your party. The Knight is good for actually killing monsters, the Wizard can cast useful spells, and the Rogue can disarm treasure chests.
