This was an intriguing post, and once again, I thoroughly enjoyed reading it simply because of the writing style. I'm going to have to ponder it longer, because it hasn't quite all made sense in my mind yet, but one part did confuse and amuse me:

> Now, is this situation any different to the socks? There was a desire (I want my feet to not fall off / I want to see Alien) and an event (Putting socks on / HBC screening Alien).

I have never in my life imagined that the purpose of socks (or shoes, for that matter) was to prevent my feet from falling off. After giving this part a second glance, I began to think of other little-known, never-thought-of purposes to common, everyday items. Of course, I started by thinking, "The purpose of a hat is to keep the head on" and, "The purpose of gloves is to keep the hands on." But it doesn't really need to end there. The common purpose of a house is to be a place in which to live, but couldn't it also be to keep the dirt in place? Or perhaps the purpose of a lamp is not to light a room, but to darken a different part of the world (in comparison to the lit part). The purpose of a cup might not be to contain liquid, but to -- OK, now I'm stumped again.

I think I'm even more confused than ever, but then again, maybe that was the purpose of this post.
