Gold Key in Brakley--where does it go?

Thanks to the tip I got for researching the maze, I have gotten an extremely long way. I just got the gold key from the magpies nest. Here are my questions:

1.) Where does this gold key fit? Any hints?

2.) I've wasted a lot of time in the chapel messing with the cross and candles. How do I get the contraption to work?

3.) What do I do in the room with the weird machines? I added my cog already.

My Inventory:

Acorns
Lavender
Fuel Can
Spade
Iron Key
Silver Key
Gold Key
Pocket Knife
Tourist Brochure
Stone Head
Translated Papyrus
Map of Brackly Hall
Map of the Maze

Any help would be GREAT!!!
