Have you opened any barriers you found? If you have, you'll find that you can go a little farther (by mine cart) in a certain direction. I think you might also have to clear something off the tracks somewhere, so make sure you've gone *everywhere* you can by foot first.

Then comes the fun part -- when you have to leave the cart, read the descriptions carefully, as there will be something different about the first ones you see. This will be a major hint as to what you will have to do next.

You will also need to clear some more stuff out of the way before you can get to the sandstone caverns proper. That is where a map will be very useful, although it might be hard to draw.

Explore everywhere in that section. And dig everywhere you can as well -- just like in the rest of the mines.
