As I recall, the route is pretty straightforward after that. Maybe I'm not explaining this as well as it needs to be explained. You still need to go downwards, but disregard the holes in the floors.
I think that once you get started, you can just keep going in the direction you didn't just come from. You actually don't have that many options along that route.
I actually found the thing I was looking for first, and then worked my way back.
I don't think I can tell you much more without playing the game again.
So, start by going SE from the first room, and the rest should be self-explanatory.
