In my school, it isn't illegal, but it is "against school policy." That means, I got in trouble once for reciting the Hail Mary just before taking my history final last year. I simply reminded the principal of my rights as outlined by the First Amendment. Then she got very defensive, saying that I should respect the diversity of my school and not forcing my religion on others. I replied that I was simply saying a prayer, and I wasn't forcing anyone to say it with me. Not to mention that I was the only one saying it. So, in truth, I wasn't forcing my religion on anyone. However, since she was trying to keep me from praying, she was trying to force her lack of religion on me.

She gave me detention for two weeks, mostly because she was angry with my insubordination, I'm sure, and on the first day, I brought a note from my aunt, who is a lawyer. I didn't read what the note said, but the principal got very red and told me I needn't come back to detention after that.
