The characters from ASCII 0 to ASCII 31 are non-printing; things like page break, vertical tab and printer bell.

ALT codes above 255 (these days, anyway) tend to be Unicode characters rather than ASCII characters. Unicode can (technically) handle an infinate number of charcaters, but are essentially limited to a couple of hundred with the current implementation.
