But if only you secret-area-finders have the answer, how could it NOT lead to the area?

I'm also positive that the clue that the cracks look similar to ones you passed some time ago is meant to make you think you're going in circles and go back, but you aren't. It keeps sloping DOWN to the south, so you couldn't get back to an area that was HIGHER without going in the opposite direction.
