No it wasn't. I know that new decades, centuries, millennia, etc. all start in years ending in "01." We're in the third millennium right now, and the 21st century started Jan. 1, 2001.

Well, the thing is, if you refer to a decade by the "eighties" or something, then you're only logically referring to the years between 1980-1989. If you were to count the number of decades since AD 1, and refer to decades that way (the way we do centuries) then you'd be right. But the seventies didn't end with 1980.
