I've never thought that those acronyms are really all that bad, though of course only for the usage of very slow typers. In instant chat and so on, when people are talking very fast and you can't type very quickly, they could help. It's when they're combined with bad spelling and a shift key that has either been pried off the keyboard or is PERMANENTLY ON that they get annoying.
