How much is a 50 year old two-speed, unsyncronized, crash box, motor scooter transmission worth. Did I mention that it is new old stock(NOS)? The last of these were made circa 1948. Well, there it was on eBay, and my '47 Cushman scooter needed it. So I started bidding and before long it was mine for $260 and change plus shipping. In 1947 you could have bought a whole scooter with transmission and the extra-cost option of fat tires, for little more than that.

Collectors are crazy. I knew one once who bought a dime for $25. Still he is probably smarter than me. I also bid four bucks for a little combo fish scale and tape measure called a De-Liar. Won that one too. Actually, $4 is a good price for one of those unless you already have ten others. But De-Liar collectors know that there are more than a dozen different variations, and as a collector, you have to have them all.

As for the two-speed scooter, I already have several single-speed scoots, a two-speed Cushman Eagle, a three-speed Vespa and a four-speed Vespa.
So why do I need to pay that much for a transmission? I'm a collector. Crazy.

PS - It runs in the family. Son Sam bought a '67 Mustang and promptly disassembled it clear down to the frame. That was a coule of years ago, and it's beginning to look better now.
