Battlement Blues

I have been trying to get that @#%* picture, and I have the portrait of myself, and I read that there is some way to make a mess. Does it involve the climbing down the rope from the battlement, or is that just a red herring? If it does, how can I do that when a guard walks by every time I start climbing?
