Yeah.. I did that too, and the soothsayer ignored me, and then the gold piece "magically" appeared back in my inventory later on in the game. Go to the store, and see if the "give gold" option is still there, then choose it, and the piece will appear again. Hopefully. At least, that's what worked for me. Good luck.
