Does anyone *not* have a "we broke down on
the way to/home from summer/winter
camp/retreat/vacation" story?

When I was in ninth grade (eleven years
ago?? Aiiieee!) my church youth group went to
snow camp at Behr Lake, Michigan during
Christmas Break. We all were piled into the
new, full-size bus that our church had recently
purchased. (Before that we had only had large
passenger vans.)

This is funny. We had only just started out on
our five+ hour drive north. We hadn't made it
more than ten miles from our starting point at
the MOST when the bus died. Right on I-75
northbound, in the middle of traffic. It was early
evening and already dark out, being in the
dead of winter. We were literally in the middle
of the highway with cars zipping by at highway
speeds on both sides. Gah.

We were, however, right next to the mall exit,
so all of the foolhardy ones (me included) left
the bus, crossed one lane of traffic, and
scrambled up the hill. At the top of the hill was
a rather nice hotel that we invaded. (It's a
Doubletree Inn now, but at the time I think it
was something else.) We mainly just wanted
to get warm.

I think the bus' air brakes had gone out or
something. I don't even remember for certain
how we got going again. I think they eventually
got the bus fixed, and an hour or two later we
continued our trip.

I seem to remember the bus breaking down
again on the way home...
