This is NASCAR stuff, so you don't have to read it if you don't want to. I want to make a few comments about Casey Atwood. A year or so ago I was watching a race (via tv)at the half-mile Nashville Speedway. A few minutes into the race one of the commentators mentioned that there was a 17-year-old high school student in the race who was a good racer. I started watching him and, sure enough, he was he was running right up there with the big boys.
Casey Atwood began racing in the Grand National division of NASCAR, and made a good showing in almost every race. His ability was far beyond his years and he was being compared to Jeff Gordon.
Recently, when Ray Evernham started building a Dodge team, he said he wanted an experienced driver and a talented rookie. He picked Bill Elliot and, just recently, young Casey.
(Who is Ray Evernham? If Richard Petty is a king, Evernham must be a god. He was Jeff Gordon's crew chief, and master-minded his meteoric entry into NASCAR's cup division)
Casey Atwood now finds himself in the dream position of driving for the best set-up man in the business and teamed with Bill Elloit. He will have the backing of Chrysler, a company that wants to return to racing as a winner. What Ray can't teach him, Bill can.
All of that's on paper, because, they won't assemble the complete team until next Feb. However they have memtioned the possibility of entering a race or two this year for R&D purposes.
And have you noticed how Bill's McDonalds ride this year has been running better and better? I suppose Ray Evernham is hanging around in their garage. Chances are he's around somewhere when Casey is setting up for a race in the Grand Nationals.
Look for Bill to run up front at Charolotte on Sunday evening. (But Mark Martin is my pick to win.)
