Joseph Campbell has identified the "Twister game in the Underworld" as an archetypal theme, which recurs often in stories of the Hero's Journey. We see it both here and in a more primitive form in "Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey." It is just such recurrent threads which enrich the mythopoeic tapestry of Mankind's existence.
