I found the miner, helped him, got the sledgehammer, and knocked down the pillar. Apparently I wasn't getting to my cart in time to find the caverns. I replaced all the tubes in the kitchen's air vents. Not entirely sure what I'm supposed to do with this Iron key, but I'm not done looking around yet.
