There's really no better way than to just keep track of what movement options you've selected at each location. Basically, wherever you are now, draw a box on a sheet of paper, and put a word or two at the top of it that describes where you are. "Elves/Dwarf" for example, or "Cabin" or "8-Way Intersection" or whatever. Then, pick an option that moves you to a new location, e.g., "Go North." Write down "North" in the box, to note that you've tried that one.

Now you're in a new location. Make a new box. Draw an arrow from the "North" in the old box to the new box, so you will remember where that "Go north" option brought you. (There is ONE "go left" option somewhere in the game that takes you to a different place each time. If this happens, ignore that option entirely. You don't need to use it to win.)

Repeat this process. Eventually, you'll return to a location you've already been in. Check to see which movement options you've chosen before and don't choose any of those again.

The secret of the game is there is no secret. You don't have to get any inventory items, time any actions, provide any services for any other characters. You literally just have to walk out of the forest, and you're done.

The trick is that walking out means picking the right movement options from the right places, where all other choices circle you back around over where you've been.

It's not actually as hard as it sounds, because despite how easy it is to get lost in the game, there aren't that many different locations -- maybe 15 or so, most of which have a very small number of movement options.

If you find a location with eight different movement options, that's the one you want to try to get back to and fully explore.
