2 dollars short of getting canteen in Outlaws

I've gotten the map and given Delhi Shanks his boots, but that cutthroast blacksmith has left me 2 dollars short of getting the 5-gallon canteen. I imagine that the next step is either the Garston the piano wire man, the goat farm near Lynnville, or the abandoned barn. But I can't seem to get Garston when he's in his room (a decoy?), and I also can't find a way of doing anything about the goats or the barn. Any hints, please?
