Go in every direction possible. You can never lose for good, even if the game seems impossible. Eventually you'll find somewhere you haven't been before. I also reccommend drawing a map of the spaceship.

There's also a quest where you're looking for a lost cat. You'll need to chase him around the spaceship, so find him first to help get you familiar with the spaceship. You can return him to one of two people and the place where you start this quest isn't too far from your cabin.
