Sword of Voltar help

I'm a bit stuck and getting frustrated with this game and its random geography, so time to beg for help before I end up giving up. My inventory is as such:
Rope
Jewel
Ray Gun (not charged/loaded/whatever)
Shield
Key
Sword
Ring
Book
Magnifying Glass

I vaguely recall running across something somewhere out in the main world, not in the castle, that I could interact with but I lacked the right equipment to do so at the time, but I can't remember what it is or how I got there. Anyone out there want to give me a hint on my next move?
