According to the news, the Space Shuttle is sitting atop a 747 at Fort Campbell, Ky/Tn. That's only a short distance by air from Nashville and I am currently just a bit southeast of the city. As I understand it, the shuttle is waiting for weather to clear in Florida so it can complete it's cross-country hop back to Cape Canavaral. I figure that with a load like that, a 747 is not going to be very high when it comes over this area and that might give me a long shot at seeing it go over. That would be a thrill for any old space flight junkie.

In June, we missed seeing this same shuttle's launch from The Cape by just a matter of hours. Our Cruise ship was somewhere between Nassau and Port Canavaral when it took off. A Roman candle like that would have been visible for some distance, but with almost 50% cloud cover, we missed it. We didn't even see a vapor trail.

So I guess I will have to go to Florida sometime and sit around on the beach for a few days. I am determined to see one of those things go. It's as good as any excuse to go sit on the beach. I never got to see a Saturn 5 take off and now it's too late.
