RULES OF PLAY

OBJECT OF THE GAME

To win. To do so, a player must be the first to enter OXFURD.


EQUIPMENT
_________________________________________________

For the play of OXFURD BLUFF, the following are included: one playing board, one die, eight play-pieces in four different colors, 1,000 Word Cards in two boxes.


WORD CARD
_________________________________________________

The back displays the Word to be read aloud and three definitions. Corresponding to each definition are two die numbers. Beside each definition is either (YES) meaning correct or (NO) meaning incorrect. On any card, there may be 0, 1, 2, or 3 correct definitions. The odds are about fifty-fifty that any definition is correct or incorrect.

The front of the card displays the Word only which can be held up for the player to see.


START OF PLAY

Each player selects two play-pieces of the same color. One piece becomes the Climber and is placed on Plateau No. 1. The second piece becomes the Descender and is placed on Descent No. 1.

Each player rolls the die. The player with the highest number will be the first to roll in play. In the case of a tie, players roll again.

NOTE: After this point, 'player' is defined as the person rolling the die, responding "YES" or "NO" for each definition read, and moving his play-pieces.


THE PLAY

Player rolls die (but does not move either of his pieces).

An opponent removes a Word Card from its box, reads the Word aloud and then reads aloud the definition that corresponds to the number rolled on the die. EXAMPLE: If a 2 is rolled, the Number 2 definition is read aloud.

The player is required to respond "YES" (the definition is correct) or "NO" (the definition is incorrect).

The reader then responds "Right" or "Wrong".


Right Responses

Every time a player's response to a definition is right, his Climber moves 'up' toward OXFURD by the number on the die. As long as the player continues with right responses, the player continues his turn.


A Wrong Response

As soon as the player's response is wrong, his turn ends. The player's Descender moves 'down' one level. The player's Climber remains where it is (except in the case of SETBACK).

When a player's response is wrong, the turn passes to the left.


Setback

When a player's Descender reaches SETBACK, the player's Climber moves 'down' to the last Plateau passed. If the Climber is already on a Plateau, it remains.

In either case, the Descender is then placed on the Descent level which corresponds to the Plateau number. EXAMPLE: If the Climber returns to or remains on Plateau No. 4, place Descender on Descent No. 4.

NOTE: LAST CHANCE is simply an unnumbered Descent level.


Pulldown

If a player's Climber lands on a step already occupied by an opponent's Climber, the opponent's Climber must return to the last Plateau passed.

No 'pulldown' occurs if the Climbers meet on a Plateau under any circumstances.

A 'pulldown' does not affect the Descender.


EXCEPTIONAL MOVES

Free Roll
_________

When a Climber lands on FREE ROLL, player rolls die again and moves 'up' by the number on the die, without having to respond to a definition. After player moves, he rolls again to resume normal play.


Bonus

When a Climber lands on BONUS, Climber moves 'up' immediately by number shown on box.


Respite
_______

A player whose answer is wrong but whose Climber is on RESPITE, still loses his turn. However, he does not move his Descender.


ENTERING OXFURD

A player is required to roll a number on his die that corresponds to the exact number of steps his Climber is from OXFURD. If the player rolls a number greater than the number of steps, he must still respond to the definition. If the player's response is right, he does not move, but rolls again.

EXAMPLE:

The Climber is two steps from OXFURD and the player rolls a 3. The player must give a right response to the Number 3 definition in order to keep his turn. However, he cannot move. Instead, he rolls again. If he rolls a 2 or a 1 and responds with a right answer, he can move. If his response is wrong, he loses his turn and his Descender moves 'down' one level.


THE SWEEP

It is possible for a player to win the game on his first turn. In this event, any other player who has not yet had his turn may attempt to reach OXFURD in his first turn and create a tie.


PLAY NOTES
_________________________________________________

OXFURD BLUFF is a particularly lively game when played by teams of two to four players on a side. It is strongly recommended that each team appoint a captain who 'officially' responds for the team.

Beside many Words, an attempt has been made to help readers with pronunciation.

TIPS:
ay = bay
eh = pet
ah = cat

Words which have all three definitions incorrect are defined at the bottom of the card.

Finally, we hope muliebrity does not leave you offended by the way in which these rules have been written. We apologize for sticking so rigidly to the rule of grammar which calls for the use of "he" and "his" when "she" and "her" are just as appropriate.
