There's only one place that sends you in circles in the garden (sending you back to the same screen). If you wind up there, just go east back to the sunflowers.
And yeah, making a map is SO HELPFUL for every one of these games. If you get through this and want to try your hand at Fantasy Quest 2, start making a map AS SOON AS YOU START. Personal experience talking here - it'll save you a lot of grief, hair-pulling, and from teaching your computer new vocabulary. ;)
