If we're talking about the same movie (see IMDb link below), it was directed by Ron Fricke. Fricke, however, was the cinematographer for Koyaanisqatsi, which was produced by Francis Ford Coppola. Coppola also produced Powaqqatsi (the next in the series) but not Naqoyqatsi, the third. I mention the Qatsi trilogy because I believe Baraka is in the same vein and I know Coppola was involved there. (Chronos is another movie in that style. I'm not sure about Anima Mundi, but it might be, too.)
