I didn't go to a nearby school because I didn't want to stay too close to home. There were plenty of excellent college options in the city 30 minutes from my house, but I wanted to be somewhere where I couldn't go running back to mommy and daddy the second something went wrong -- I wanted to _have_ to be independent, to some extent. It's certainly possible to go to school 30 minutes from home and not rely on one's parents, but I wondered if I'd be able to resist such reliance. I think it's much easier to become able to function independently of your parents if you have no other choice.
