Both of you are reading too much into it. It's a simple statement of irony.
It reminds me of the Far Side one that shows two explorers standing at the mouth of a cave. There's growling coming from inside, and a pile of bones beside the entrance. One man says to the other, "That's just the wind blowing across the opening."
