Hazardous materials in schools are nothing new. I've always believed that an annual hasmat sweep was a good idea. Mercury, asbestos, formaldehyde, acids and radiation sources are just a few hazards that are common in schools.

Radiation is easy to detect. A simple detector can spot it even without opening the drawer.

Maybe the terrorists have done us one little favor in making us more aware of radiation hazards. The same equipment that scans shipping containers, packages, suitcases, and any other likely hiding spaces could also be used in schools. Regular sweeps would be worth the cost.

Next, let's worry about asteroids, then global warming. . . . .
