Yes, I've seen cartoon hole residents with the equally "cartooned" Aussie Outback hats with suspended corks. I'd forgotten those. I have very clear memories of very non-PC cartoons (using the elements yellow, coolie hat and buck teeth) which I think would be offensive in today's world.

So. We both accept an Aussie cartoon default, and I remember from the 1950s a China default. I guess it may have been a family thing.
