amendments

I'm not a constitutional lawyer, so I may need a little help on this. Isn't the purpose of amendments to protect rights? I'm thinking of both federal and state constitutions. When they amend a constitution, isn't it usually to protect a citizens's rights or provide a right that some citizens have been denied? Is it normal to amend a constitution to limit the rights of a segment of the population?

Naturally, I'm thinking of the gay marriage thing. If the state or federal constitution is amended to limit a citizen's rights, aren't we moving in a different direction?

I'd like to here some opinions on this.
