When I taught English to South Korean kids, I learned that "The Sound of Music" was a huge hit in South Korea. EVERYBODY has seen it, they all know it and love it, from the little kids I was teaching to their parents and grandparents.

But very oddly, they didn't seem familiar with any of the songs.

It turns out that when it was shown in South Korea, theatres felt it was too long. So it was edited for length. How was it edited? That's right. They cut ALL the musical numbers. Every last one of them. Then they screened it, still called "The Sound of Music" but with no music whatsoever, and South Korea went wild.

I brought in a video of it and told them this was the original movie, and it had a lot of songs in it, and maybe they'd like it even more. Well, it was like they had died and gone to heaven. I swear within a week that video had made the rounds of every South Korean immigrant family in the city. "Check it out! It's the director's cut of The Sound of Music! There's like an extra hour and it's singing and dancing, it's AWESOME!"
