talking to the elders

As happens fairly often, two young men passed through our neighborhood the other day. You guessed it. Morman Elders. I often talk to them, but not about religion. These two guys were both Hispanic. One was from Peru and the other from Mexico. Their English was very good with just a trace of an accent.

They were surprised to find that I had two half-Peruvian grandkids. The Peruvian Elder had lived in California, and asked it I had ever been there. When I said, yes, that I had been there many times and had traveled in all 50 states, they were quite surprised.* I was wearing work cloths, and needed a shave, so I guess they thought I was a bum. I certainly looked the part. We discussed Peru, California, and the towns along the Rio Grande in Texas. The Mexican Elder was from Nuevo Laredo, on the Mexican side of the river.

It was easy to tell that they were well educated. Both were neat with typical Hispanic good looks.

It's sometime easier to be rude to people who are going door to door, especially if you are busy, but I don't like to do it. If you say you don't want to discuss religion, or buy what someone is selling, you might get into a good conversation. I especially enjoy talking to people from different cultures. And I am partial to Hispanics.
