Reviews and Comments

Film noir about a woman (Ava Gardner) who returns to her home town after time in the city. Her return re-ignites some old flames. George Raft plays one of Gardner's love interests, but it's not clear if he's the good one or the bad one.

The plot is one contrivance after another, and sometimes the characters' motivations are inscrutable, but the stars almost make it work anyway. Raft and Gardner are at home in these sorts of roles, and watching them is a pleasure. On top of that, Victor McLaglen is excellent in a supporting role. Still, I'd sooner recommend a number of other titles in these actors' filmographies.
