When Harry Met Sally... (1989)

Reviews and Comments

Well written dialogue is the highlight of this infamous romantic comedy from director Rob Reiner. As members of the audience, we wish we could be so succinct and eloquent.

Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan play people who keep bumping into each other over the course of their lives. They get along terribly, until the passing of years and heartbreaks open their eyes to each other. They become fast friends, but can a man and a woman really be good friends and nothing more?

The characters and the chemistry between them comprise the majority of this film's appeal. There is the occasional scene where character is sacrificed for humor but very few, and the film bounces back right away each time. On the whole, When Harry Met Sally... is simultaneously funny and intelligent and driven by characters we come to know and care about, as all the best romantic comedies are.
