Not Disney's best, but that's hardly an insult. This film tells the familiar story as renovated by Disney. (Of course, the original story was much too brutal to be transferred, unchanged, to a Disney animated film!) Merlin, in particular, is an affable old geezer who, in his strange ways, helps young Arthur out and teaches him some life lessons. There's lots of magic and wonder; some adults and all kids should be enchanted by it. Unfortunately, the hard-edged style of animation that worked so well for 101 Dalmatians is already a minor fault here. The drawings lack the depth, detail, and beauty that made Disney's earliest work so captivating.
