Reviews and Comments

This American remake of Le Jour Se Leve is a highly satisfying film noir. It opens with an alleged murderer holed up in a top floor apartment, with police and a swarming crowd trying to get him out. A murder has been committed, and a series of flashbacks -- including a flashback within a flashback -- tell the story that leads up to it all. Henry Fonda's tortured performance is wonderful, while Vincent Price is at his smarmiest best as a rival for his beloved's affections. The intriguing story is made all the more engaging by the psychological depth typical of the genre. Haunting cinematography and effective music help, too.
