Reviews and Comments

Map of the Human Heart is a frustrating wartime romance epic. It's creatively and sensitively filmed, acted well, and technically solid. Unfortunately, for all careful attention given to its characters, I can't say I particularly cared for them. The movie is a bizarre paradox, focusing so heavily on the emotions and feelings of its characters and yet remaining strangely distant from its audience. It's as if the movie were so consumed with itself, it forgets to let its audience in, too. Thus distanced, I was too free to react to the film with the left side of the brain, noting cliches and unevenness in the storytelling. As much as I wanted to like this movie, it didn't hit home with me. There is much to like and admire here, but, at least for me, little to love.
