This strangely emotionless remake of the 1981 Ray Harryhausen film overdoses on computer-generated imagery, some of it done well and some decidedly not. What made Harryhausen's stop-motion animation work so well wasn't photorealism but its weight and presence. The creatures may have been made from clay, but they were there. Compare that with the crab fight in this remake, which looks conspicuously like stunt men jumping around at imagined horrors and animators filling the empty spaces.

That isn't why the film doesn't work. The film doesn't work simply because there is not a single personality amongst its broad cast of characters. We don't for a moment believe they feel the emotions they dutifully act out, so why should we?
