This film is in that annoying category of films that could have been good, except that they got "dumbed-down." The basic plot of species involves so much technical, gene-splicing pseudo-scientific jargon that ninety-five percent of the intended audience wouldn't really be able to follow it. How is this dealt with? Is the scientific stuff explained in laymen's terms as best as possible? No, it's just ignored. It's left for granted that all this happened, and the movie focuses on killing the alien beastie.

This wouldn't be *so* bad, except that the director apparently got bored with senseless violence after a short while and turned to mindless sex instead. I have never seen so many gratuitous nude scenes in a movie before.

Even all of this wouldn't make it an entirely wasted film except for one thing: the concept was pretty stupid to begin with. Aliens sent to earth a genetic code and told us to bond it with our own. So, naturally, we do. Of course, it never occurs to anyone to test it and see what it might be until *much later*. Ugh.
